Menorca (Minorca), Spain - Five Reasons to Visit

August 20, 2023 | Featured Destinations

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, and a piece of the Balearic Islands, Menorca is often overlooked by travelers because of the popularity of other nearby islands.  However, I've got five reasons why you need to consider Menorca, Spain as your next travel destination:

  • First of all, it is part of the Balearic Islands - Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, and Formantera – and is just off the coast of mainland Spain.  Menorca has a rocky and rugged shoreline with beautiful sandy beaches and blue-green waters.  Its towns are authentic, and the living is slow.  Being apart of Spain also means the island offers tapas, paella, and smooth Spanish reds.
  • Secondly, in 1993 UNESCO designated the island as a Biosphere Reserve.  As a result, most of the island is a genuine oasis of unspoilt beauty with over 200 animal species – 26 of them native to the island.
  • Thirdly, the island is scattered with archaeological sites dating back thousands of years including prehistoric towns and settlements.  The whole island itself has been deemed an "open-air museum".
  • Fourthly, there are six lovely vineyards on the island for your enjoyment each offering a unique experience and local wines.  However, if you are looking for something stronger, they also have a gin distillery, Xoriguer, where you can have a tour and taste their products.
  • Lastly, but certainly not least, their nightlife is calm and cozy, while the food is fantastic!  Be sure to try their traditional lobster dish, savor their tapas and taste all of their local cheeses.

The best time to travel to Menorca is May-June or September-October.
