Beyond the View: Why Explora Redefines Adventure Travel

For over 30 years, Explora has pioneered a different kind of exploration—one that goes far deeper than sightseeing. From the otherworldly landscapes of the Atacama Desert to the peaks of Machu Picchu, their award-winning lodges and expert-led expeditions don't just show you the world's most pristine destinations; they help you truly understand and protect them.

An Award-Winning Collection of Lodges and Expeditions in Iconic Destinations

At Explora, everything begins with an epic story of place. Since their founding in 1993, they have worked to bring the landscapes, wildlife and cultures of South America — and beyond — within reach of anyone with a passion to explore. Not as a spectator, but deeply, authentically, and in ways that leave you transformed.

That is what adventure travel means to them. And it is what has guided every lodge built, every route experts have pioneered, and every exploration that has been led across some of the wildest, most pristine destinations on earth.

Born in and of These Lands

There is a difference between visiting a place and truly knowing it. At Explora, they have spent more than three decades studying every dynamic valley, coastline and plateau in the destinations you visit, choosing unspoiled routes that are nothing short of spectacular, while honoring all that is in need of protection.

Explore with guides that are trained in their own School of Guides, specialists who do not simply lead you through a landscape, but help you read it. To hike in Torres del Paine with an Explora guide is not only to walk one of the world's most iconic trails. It is to understand the geology beneath your feet, the role of the puma in a thriving ecosystem, and the stories written into the lenga forests that have stood here for centuries. To horseback ride in Patagonia is to do so alongside resident gauchos who welcome you into a vital, living culture. The result is an experience both deep and broad.

The Luxury of the Essential

Their award-winning lodges are thoughtfully designed to reveal the landscapes that surround them, immersing you in the luxury of the essential. Striking architecture. Seamless comfort. Outstanding dining. And every expert-led exploration, exceptional meal and glass of local wine.

But more than the essential luxuries they deliver, Explora's lodges provide everything you need to go beneath the surface at each destination.

In the Atacama Desert, the 50-room lodge straddles the historic town of San Pedro de Atacama and their own Puritama Conservation Reserve — a 17,300-acre sanctuary where you follow a desert stream through a lush canyon to arrive at naturally occurring hot springs, or set off through the aptly named Mars Valley on a trek through one of the most photogenic landscapes on the planet. At night, the onsite Observatory puts the Milky Way and the Southern Cross within reach, guided by astronomy experts under skies that rank among the darkest on earth.

In the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a hacienda-inspired lodge at Valle Sagrado sits far removed from the tourist hustle and bustle, opening the door to nearly 35 in-depth explorations — from visits to the living communities of Chinchero, where textile traditions stretch back centuries, to an ascent of Machu Picchu that feels not like a day trip but a culmination. Between adventures, a spa housed in a 17th-century colonial manor and a menu that brings an artful, modern twist to Andean cuisine restore you for whatever comes next.

Wherever you stay, every Explora lodge is a basecamp for going further.

The Largest & Best-Connected Network in South America

Explora's network represents the largest collection of strategically positioned lodges, expeditions and conservation reserves in South America — spanning nine iconic territories and representing an unmatched local presence no other travel company can claim. From Torres del Paine to Easter Island, El Chaltén, and the Bolivian Altiplano, they connect far-flung destinations as no one else can, laying the wonders of an entire continent at your feet.

Whether you choose to settle into one destination or connect multiple ones, every Explora stay is seamlessly linked — with transfers, logistics, and every detail handled in advance, so you arrive in each wild place fully present and ready to explore.

Transformative Expeditions and Travesías for Next-Level Adventure

For those who dream of going even further into the world's most pristine and boundless frontiers, experience small-group Expeditions and bespoke Travesía — intimate, point-to-point journeys for a maximum of eight people, taking you far off the tourist trails, often on routes pioneered by Explora's own experts, to discover places where humans rarely set foot.

You can venture beyond South America with the Iceland Expedition — an eight-day immersion into the uninhabited Southern Highlands, through the verdant Thorsmork River Valley and the multi-colored geothermal landscape of Landmannalaugar, past thundering waterfalls and across ice-blue lagoons. It is the kind of destination that expresses, in its rawness and scale, exactly what they mean when they talk about a place synonymous with nature at its most epic.

Closer to Explora's roots, the Sacred Mountains Expedition traces a rarely experienced path through the Vilcabamba mountain range before a finale at one of the Seven Wonders of the World — arriving at Machu Picchu not as a tourist, but as a true explorer. And the Tierra del Fuego Expedition journeys to the extreme southern wonderland that Ferdinand Magellan named the Land of Fire — where penguin colonies, fjord glaciers and unpopulated territories await at the very end of the world.

Each Expedition follows ideally timed departures and is fully customizable for private groups — for a milestone celebration, a far-flung gathering, or simply a desire for time together somewhere truly extraordinary.

A Table as Remarkable as the Place

Adventure at Explora does not end when you return to the lodge. Outstanding dining is as integral to the Explora experience as the explorations themselves.

In El Chaltén, fire-cooked Argentine cuisine reflects the wildness of the surrounding Los Huemules Conservation Reserve. At Torres del Paine, a dining room wrapped in panoramic windows serves locally inspired cuisine against commanding views of the park's famed Cuernos. On the Travesía Atacama to Uyuni, meals at three intimate Bolivian mountain lodges are as much a part of the journey as the shimmering salt flats stretching beyond the window.

Dining, at Explora, is a form of exploration. Another layer of the place you have come so far to know.

Conservation as a Way of Being

At Explora, protecting these pristine environments is part of their promise. Conservation is not simply an initiative, but a way of being. Working alongside local communities, dedicated conservation experts develop innovative solutions in the regions where they operate, including the Puritama Conservation Reserve in the Atacama Desert and the Torres Del Paine Conservation Reserve — protected sanctuaries that ensure these special places endure for generations to come.

When you travel with Explora, you are not only exploring wild places. You are helping to protect them.

An Invitation to Explore Differently

No matter the journey you desire — whether a week in one extraordinary destination or a multi-country adventure across an entire continent — you're invited to join in experiencing a different kind of exploration. One that goes beneath the surface, that cherishes this world's wild places, that sparks a desire to leave them far better than they were found. And most importantly, one that will transform you completely.
