Slovenia

Destinations

July 17, 2019

In June 2019 I went to Slovenia for a 6 night stay and I had a wonderful time touring around this beautiful country.

Slovenia is a gem of a country, it is very green, clean and safe country. It is safe to drink water from the tap, the hotels give you free water bottles, you can even go to a bar and they will refill your empty water bottle for free.

We started our journey in the capital Ljubljana and we stayed for 3 nights at the Grand Hotel Union which is right in the centre of the old city, a perfect location where you can walk to many restaurants, bars, cafes and shops and the main sights of the city.

The Old City Centre is all pedestrian area, there are many beautiful bridges and everything is very close by.  It is a very lively city and it doesn't matter what time of the day there are many people out, locals and tourist, enjoying the many restaurants and cafes.

The food is very good and it is mostly locally sourced, they believe in quality over quantity and it didn't find it to expensive to eat out.

Since Slovenia borders 4 countries, Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia you will find that the cuisine has influences from these countries.

In Ljubljana, we visited the castle, enjoyed a cruise on the river and saw the sights of the old city on private tour.

From the capital is is a short drive to Lake Bled, a beautiful lake in the Slovenian Alps.

The town of Bled is a very touristy town with lots of resort hotels and it is very pretty however very busy with lots of tourists.  From the shore of the lake you can take a local boat to Bled Island and visit the church.  Close by is the Bled Castle and it is worth it to visit the castle if only for the gorgeous views of the lake and mountains.

From Ljubljana we went to the Postjana Caves, one of the largest cave systems in Europe, 25 km have been mapped out so far.

You enter the cave and take the mini train for quite a while before getting out and walking with the tour guide.  The caves are very impressive with many galleries, halls and passages.  Remember to bring a jacket since the temperature in the cave is 10degrees celcius.

We then spent one night at the Hotel Grad Otocec Relais & Chateaux, this was an amazing experience.  The hotel is situated on an island in the middle of a river, it is a very peaceful setting.  The hotel has 16 rooms and suites and a fabolous restaurant.  Close by within a 15 min. walk is one of the best golf courses in Slovenia.  If you have a car rental it is possible to visit wineries in the area.

From Otocec we spent our last 2 nights in Portoroz at the Kempinsky Palace Hotel.  Portoroz is on the Slovenia coast, Slovenia has only a small 38 km coastline however they are very proud of this coastline.  The largest city is Koper which also has a port and some cruise lines stop here.

In Portoroz, we spent 2 beautiful days walking in the town and along the water front, you can walk to Piran from here or take a quick taxi ride.  Piran is a very small town with lots of Italian and Venetian history.  The old town square reminds you of being in Venice without the canals.  We enjoyed a private walking tour in the tour and later had a wonderful dinner before going back to Portoroz.

Right now is a good time to go since it still offers great value.

I loved out time that we spent in Slovenia and I would certainly like to return someday!
