KAKADU NATIONAL PARK
Self-Guided Kakadu Exploration (suggested experiences)

Stop at Humpy Doo to see the Big Boxing Croc, a 13-metre high statue inspired by Australia's successful 1983 America's Cup bid. Visit the Humpty Doo Hotel to view the world's biggest set of Water Buffalo horns above the bar and meet plenty of local characters.

Explore The Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, a protected wetland area 70km from Darwin within the Adelaide and Mary River Floodplains, an Important Bird Area. Walk the boardwalks across different landscapes to observation platforms for viewing large numbers of resident wading birds—best experienced from late March to early October. If time permits, enjoy a jumping crocodile cruise in Wak Wak (four cruises daily).

Continue to Mamukala Wetlands, a bird lover's paradise with a short walk to an observation platform nestled into paperbarks. Discover an astonishing variety of birdlife including Magpie Geese, Kites, Combe-crested Jacanas, Cormorants, Willie Wagtails, Purple Swamp Hens, Finches, and Kingfishers—one of Kakadu's best birdwatching areas.

Arrive in Jabiru town centre, the main township in Kakadu National Park, with essential services including supermarket, bank, medical centre, bakery, and limited restaurants and cafes.

Self-Guided Kakadu Exploration (suggested experiences over 2 days)

Kakadu National Park is internationally famous for its breath-taking natural beauty of wetlands, escarpments, and spectacular waterfalls, as well as its more than 50,000-year-old First Nations cultural heritage. The park covers almost 20,000 kilometres and encompasses a huge variety of Top End habitats with many different species of reptile, bird, and plant life, with more than 5,000 First Nations cultural sites throughout.

Explore the ancient rock-art galleries of Kakadu, the oldest in the world, which record extinct species like the thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) and depict sacred creation beings like Namarrgon the Lightning Man and Ngalyod the Rainbow Serpent.

If time permits, visit Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) where you can explore renowned First Nations rock art walks, hike to the spectacular Nawurlandja Lookout, or use the picnic area and visitor facilities—allow around 2-3 hours to appreciate the remarkable First Nations rock art and cultural significance.

Stop at Mirray Lookout for a moderate challenge with a short, steep walk leading to a shaded viewing platform under a canopy of trees offering 360-degree views showcasing Kakadu's vast landscape—best visited in the dry season from late April to early November when temperatures are cool for walking.

Early Morning 2-Hour Yellow Water Cruise

- Experience a Yellow Water Billabong — Kakadu's most famous wetland at the end of Jim Jim Creek as you adventure tour through river channels, floodplains, and backwater swamps
- The chance to see "the big five" — all five kingfisher species found in Kakadu, as well as crocodiles in natural habitat and buffalo on floodplains and Jabiru's nest viewing and seasonal Brolga dancing

KATHERINE GORGE/NITMILUK NATIONAL PARK
Self-Guided Katherine Gorge Exploration (suggested experiences over 2 days)

Stop in Pine Creek, a small town that experienced a gold rush in 1871, before arriving in Katherine, where the outback meets the tropics. Katherine serves as the gateway to sixteen national parks, nature parks, reserves, and conservation parks.

If time permits, take a refreshing dip in the Katherine Hot Springs—a series of clear pools fed by a natural thermal spring located on the banks of the Katherine River.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Nitmiluk region from your self-contained chalet positioned just 600 metres from the departure point for boat cruises and canoes. Observe wallabies and other wildlife wandering freely around your generous balcony overlooking the escarpment.

Explore the mighty Katherine River as it slices through towering sandstone cliffs to form the world-famous Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, a vast network of rivers, escarpments, and gorges weaving through sprawling plains of cattle stations, national parks, and reserves in the Katherine region.

Arrive at Adelaide River, the only site of an Australian War Cemetery on Australian soil. During the Second World War, Adelaide River was the headquarters of a large base and the Adelaide River War Cemetery was created for the burial of servicemen and women who died in this part of Australia, containing 435 servicemen and 63 civilians.

Stop at the Territory Wildlife Park to wander through treetop aviaries, around a natural lagoon, and walk through the aquarium to see animals including saltwater crocodiles in their natural habitats.
