I'm here in Australia for a mini-vacation visiting my son Adam and his buddy Colin while their attending Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Whenever I'm around "Aussies" they've told me I must experience Byron Bay... It's in their DNA!
Byron Bay is approximately 2 hours south of Brisbane and the Gold Coast and is the most easterly point of Australia. Cape Byron was named after poet Lord Byron's dad, Captain John Byron, a friend of Captain Cook's and is one of the first places named as Cook sailed the Endeavour down the coast in 1770.
We arrived for the weekend and stayed in town across from the beach at the Beach Suites. The beach view and garden view suites are large, each with a private terrace complete with a BBQ and the penthouse units have plunge pools. This is a good location for touring this eclectic town of surfers and artists, organic food shops and handicrafts, restaurants and sports bars.
The real attraction here however, other than the surf is The Byron at Byron Resort & Spa. Set on 45 acres amongst a sub tropical rain forest and a short walk to Tallow Beach, this is the place to experience natural luxury. The 92 spacious one-bedroom suites feature king beds, separate lounge and dining area with kitchen as well as 2 enclosed verandas.
We spent 2 amazing days and nights here enjoying rain forest walks on endless timber boardwalks, swimming in the infinity pool, playing in the surf at Tallow Beach and dining al fresco in the fabulous Restaurant. Lyn & John Parche and the Byron at Byron Family will ensure you have a most enjoyable stay.
