My son Adam is spending his college co-op term working in Alberta so I decided to fly out to Calgary for the weekend and take in the Canadian Rockies. This is usually a winter trip for me as our group of guys descends on Banff each ski season for "Happy Ski Week". However this time we're concentrating on golf and mountain biking in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Our accommodations for the weekend are at the castle, The Fairmont Banff Springs.
On Friday we played golf at the Robert Trent Jones Sr. masterpiece, Kananaskis Country Golf Course. Dazzling Rocky Mountain scenery with the challenge and beauty of two of Canada's Top 50 golf courses is hard to beat. Every tee shot features a unique scenic portrayal of the picturesque Kananaskis Valley and towering Mount Kidd and Mount Lorette.
Saturday we rented mountain bikes and travelled along the Trans-Canada highway from Banff to Canmore before climbing the Smith-Dorrien Road to the Spray River and Goat Creek trail. This popular 19 kilometre double-track follows an old fire road descending along Goat Creek below Mount Rundle and ends back at the Fairmont Banff Springs. With more than 190 kilometres of mountain bike trails and numerous road riding options, biking is an excellent way to explore this special place.
Tomorrow, we'll play The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, a captivating and challenging layout set in the heart of Canada's Rocky Mountains. Stanley Thompson, Canada's master golf course architect, used his expert talent when he designed the original 18 holes in 1928. The course winds along the Bow River under the snow-capped peaks of Sulphur Mountain and Mount Rundle.
Monday I'll be flying to Dallas-Forth Worth for the GetThere Summit... stay tuned for updates!
