Amankora Adventure - Paro, Bhutan?

Destinations

May 21, 2010

We're on the final leg of our Amankora Adventure in Bhutan. After departing the Punakha Valley, we drove over Dochu La (3140m) once again and descended into the capital city Thimphu for a game of golf at the Royal Thimphu Golf Club. This is a 9 hole course beautifully situated above Trashi Chhoe Dzong. Our ensemble of 6 golfers, young local caddies and a handful of drivers and guides was very amusing for all participants. Afterwards we visited a local handicrafts shop to pick up hand painted artwork.

We continued on through the Paro Valley viewing the Paro Dzong and enjoying an amazing outdoor dinner at Drukgyel Dzong located above Amankora Paro.

The absolute highlight of our entire Bhutan experience was a hike to Takshang Goemba, the Tiger's Nest. Tiger's Nest is one of Bhutan's most revered monuments. It literally hangs off the face of a cliff 900m (2952ft) above the valley floor. The hike up takes approximately 2 hours including the final 700 stone steps to the temple. Visiting Tiger's Nest is both spiritual and spectacular! Legend states that Guru Rinpoche flew from Singye Dzong to Takshang on a mythical tigress and meditated in the cave before bringing Buddhism to Bhutan.

We completed our final day in Bhutan by hiking a 3 hour mountain ridge trail including a mountain top picnic lunch with our guide overlooking Amankora Paro. Our wonderful multi-course Indian dinner tonight was preceded by an informative lecture by a Buddhist Monk in the Amankora lounge.

You must visit this mystical land. Contact me for details on how you too can experience Bhutan!
